The most widely accepted story for the origin of 420 belongs to a group of San Rafael High School friends who called themselves the Waldos, as they often hung out by a wall outside of their school. The Waldos referred to the operation as "420 Louis," a coded invitation to meet at 4:20 PM after sports practice at the statue of Louis Pasteur in front of campus.
